DESCRIPTION
This award-winning, accredited self-directed online course is designed to enhance providers’ knowledge and skills for supporting refugee mental health. The course is interactive, including case studies, quizzes, self-reflection activities and over 40 videos. An inter-professional panel of subject-matter experts is available to answer questions and provide practical knowledge and information. Join the over 2,400 service providers who have already participated!
The course will help you to:
• identify key determinants of refugees' mental health
• recognize mental health problems in refugees
• understand the unique needs of vulnerable refugee subgroups (e.g., women, children, victims of torture)
• promote refugee mental health
• consider key issues in screening, assessment, and treatment (for health care providers*)
• work effectively with interpreters
• avoid burnout and vicarious trauma.
During the 4-week course session, you will have online access 24/7 to complete the learning modules at your own pace and to participate in online discussions. After the course, you can take advantage of the online Community of Practice and online resource toolkit.
This course was developed by experts in the mental health and settlement fields in response to a national study among settlement and health care providers that identified needs and best practices for supporting refugee mental health.
The course is held under the auspices of Continuing Professional Development, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto and CAMH.
*This course is accredited for:
- The College of Family Physicians of Canada – up to 11 Mainpro-M1 credits
- Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada – up to 11 Section 1 credits.
