Course/Workshop
For: General public
Provided by: SafeGuards Training

Date and Time

Mon May 7 to Tue May 8, 2018 (This event is over)

Location

Timmins, ON

Event Description

Suicide is the second leading cause of death among Canadians aged 15 to 34 (Statistics Canada, 2001). Children and youth who experience a family member's death by suicide are at risk for childhood traumatic grief - a combination which makes the trauma difficult to resolve and impedes grieving processes. Surviving family members are at increased risk for suicide and suicidal ideation that can be passed on to future generations.

There is good news. While active and passive suicidal ideation is a frequent reason for referral to mental health centres, suicide-related symptoms can be treated effectively with evidence-based therapeutic models like Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for adolescents that include family members.

This workshop is for clinicians, child and youth workers, crisis intake workers and others who want to examine myths surrounding suicide in communities and learn guidelines for assessing and treating friends and families who are suicide survivors.

Topics include:
-How to debrief a family when a child or adolescent has made a non-fatal suicide attempt
-How to create safety plans that includes family members
-Supporting families in the creation of a "suicide free" family in the immediate and long-term future
