Event Description

The Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division (CMHA BC) wants to spark a conversation with British Columbians about the need to intervene early to prevent mental illness, including addictions, and is hosting a conference on mental health and addiction in Victoria on November 28th –30th.

The conference is called B4Stage4: Changing The Way We Think About Mental Health because we would never knowingly wait until Stage 4 to intervene for cancer; we educate, screen and take action in the early stages. We need to do the same for mental illness and addiction.

The B4Stage4 Conference will bring together speakers that are both experts in their field and have lived experience of mental health issues. The Right Honourable Norman Lamb, Member of Parliament, United Kingdom, will be the keynote speaker. A British Liberal Democrat politician, the Right Honourable Lamb played a leading role in driving mental health care to the top of the political agenda in the UK. He steered the 2014 Care Act through Parliament and introduced maximum wait time standards for mental health.

In addition, the conference will feature an impressive line-up of plenary and panel speakers, including Gillian Carleton – Olympic medalist and mental health champion, Paul Gionfriddo – CEO of Mental Health America, parent, author, past Mayor and past elected official, Charlotte Waddell – Director, Children’s Health Policy Centre; Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences, SFU; Andre Picard – Health Columnist for The Globe and Mail.

The conference is suitable to all interested individuals and we encourage delegates from all public and private sectors to attend. Delegates will include elected officials, policy makers, researchers, journalists, advocates, expert voices of those with lived experience, clinicians and artists.
